Greetings! You’re [hopefully] a BGCA-affiliated person who is hoping to make the club more inclusive of kids of all genders and sexualities. Great! We’re a non-officially-BGCA-affiliated organization who is doing everything we can to help. Let us know if there’s anything else you need, and use anything on this page (or this site) to keep doing the great work you’re doing.

Any questions for BGCA directly please contact Kristin Unzicker (Senior Director of Health & Wellness at BCGA) at [email protected].

Continue Learning

Want to continue your learning about gender and sexuality topics? Here are some next steps that we’ve put together just for BGCA folks.

We have a whole resource page on this site, and here are some great places to get started:

Guide to Gender — A book written by Safe Zone Project co-creator Sam Killermann all about gender! It’s a couple hundred pages of gender exploration, social justice how-tos, practical resources, and fun graphics & comics. You can get the book three ways (PDF, Kindle, Amazon) on the website.

ItsPronouncedMetrosexual — A site featuring a ton of useful articles on gender and sexuality, social justice, and more! Read about how to support someone’s coming out process, privilege lists, and much more!

Teaching Transgender Toolkit — “The Teaching Transgender Toolkit is a detailed collection of best practices, lesson plans and resources for those who wish to facilitate trainings about transgender people, identities and experiences.”

Iowa High School Athletics Association Transgender Students Statement – This document is the officially policy from the state of Iowa on how to affirm and include transgender students in sports. Policy includes useful (and trans* affirming) language on locker rooms/bathrooms, overnight accomodation, dress code, and more.

3 Strategies for Include Pronouns in Group Introductions – Handout created to help you invite folks to share their pronouns in introductions by Safe Zone Project co-creator Meg Bolger.

Notable Organizations

There are numerous organizations working to help create a more inclusive and affirming for LGBTQ folks (youth specifically) a few we’d like to highlight:

GLSEN – Mission is to ensure every member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Tons of great resources specially focusing on LGBTQ youth in school settings at GLSEN.org.

PFLAG – An organization dedicated to advancing equality and full societal affirmation of LGBTQ people particularly focused on working with families, friends, and allies of LGBTQ youth and adults.
